Check out the Dancing Rabbit here in Missouri. I believe they have openings. You have to go on a trial visit to see if you fit in there. Most are Vegan and everything is off the grid. I suggest everyone check it out. Eco villages are popping up everywhere here in the US.  http://www.dancingrabbit.org/

in addition to choosing eco friendly products it is important to brainstorm choices we can make to slow consumerism all together, the main reason the earth is forgotten. Such as not using shampoo/conditioner at all (http://www.crunchybetty.com/no-poo-to-you-too) or using products at home such as cornstarch or baby powder as face powder or not even using these types of products at all. consider buying in bulk to cut down on packaging.

http://www.livinginthefuture.org is a website for those who are looking into eco-villages and how to be self-sustaining. I really like the ideas that they have. It would be cool to do this in the USA.
